Why do we harm ourselves and others?

My research in psychological science centers on this existential question about human nature. I investigate the cognitive, affective, and motivational mechanisms underlying destructive behaviors directed toward the self, such as suicide and addiction, as well as toward others, such as stigmatization, dehumanization, and violence.
